The lyrics of the French folk song are “Here is a ladder so steep and so high, Here in my hand is a red rubber ball…”).
John Kendall added French Folk Song and several other complementary folk tunes to Book 1 of the Suzuki Method when he published Listen and Play in the 1960s.
This was the first American publication of the Suzuki Violin School.
Now the French folk song is played on all instruments and has practically become the international theme song for cellists.
Kendall referred to its original source, Vol. 7 of the Concord Series, a classroom songbook, published in 1921. This volume was found in the Texas Tech University Library and this is where the lyrics could be obtained the in 1988.
