“Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” is a popular Christmas children’s song known by this name in English and also in several countries with different titles and lyrics, such as in French “Ah ! vous dirai-je, Maman”, in English “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” and in German “Morgen kommt der Weihnachtsmann”. The first written appearance is French and dates from 1761.
A common misconception, reinforced by its appearance as the correct answer in the original edition of Trivial Pursuit, is that the music was written by Mozart. Mozart did not compose the original French melody, but he wrote 12 variations of it. These variants are listed as KV 265 (later KV 300e). Another common misconception is that all versions of the song are considered nursery rhymes; on the contrary, the text of the original French version was clearly not intended for children.
There are also versions of the original tune in many other languages, including English, which has been shared with the Alphabet Song since 1834, as well as the songs Baa, Baa, Black Sheep and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
